Palinuro - Centola

Palinuro è una celebre località balneare, con una ricca attrezzatura alberghiera ed extralberghiera che deve il suo nome, secondo la leggenda, allo sfortunato nocchiero di Enea che, vinto dal sonno, cadde nel mare tirandosi dietro il timone. Qui si conservano anche testimonianze greche nella necropoli e i ruderi del castello e della Chiesa di San Giuliano del 1100. La gita in barca attorno al promontorio consente di visitare una serie di grotte naturali, tra le quali fanno spicco la famosa grotta Azzurra e la grotta Sulfurea, oltre che alle grotte del Ribalto, Fetente, del Buon Dormire, delle Ossa, con stalattiti e pareti incorporanti resti di ossa umane e di animali preistorici. A pochi chilometri troviamo la frazione di San Severino di Centola la cui importanza storica non deve sfuggire. Di essa sopravvivono il borgo medioevale e il castello. Località strategica non solo nell'antichità, a cominciare dai Longobardi, ma anche ai nostri giorni. Infatti nell'ultimo conflitto mondiale vi fu dislocato il Battaglione 101 Alpino Difesa Costiera. Tutta la località è ricca di bellezze paesaggistiche. Palinuro è sede di una prestigiosa manifestazione musicale di respiro internazionale: il "Palinuro festival". Nel periodo fine luglio-inizio agosto, sul porto di Palinuro, la suggestiva coreografia del paesaggio si fonde mirabilmente con il gusto mediterraneo della musica che si ascolta nelle serate del festival. Al notevole afflusso di persone che si verifica fa fronte l'organizzazione di parcheggi spaziosi previsti nei pressi del porto. A picco sul mare, troviamo inoltre varie torri che cingono tutt'intorno il promontorio di Capo Palinuro. Partendo dal porto, troviamo la torre, detta del Porto, completamente trasformata ed adibita a ristorante, anche se nella struttura esterna conserva qualche cosa d'antico.
